Will the new second generation experience ‘downward assimilation’? Segmented assimilation re-assessed

چکیده
Research on the “new second generation” in the United States has been deeply influenced by the hypothesis of “segmented assimilation”, which contends that the children of immigrants are at risk of downward mobility into a “new rainbow underclass”. This article seeks to assess that assertion, focusing on the experience of Mexicans, the overwhelmingly largest of today’s second-generation groups, and a population of predominantly workingor lower-class origins. The empirical component of this article rests on analysis of a combined sample of the 1996–2001 Current Population

Children of Immigrant Parents and the Question of Aspirations for the Future: Understanding segmented assimilation theory from a new perspective
This thesis explores the aspirations and perceived barriers to socioeconomic attainment of children of immigrant parents. In the United States, research on the socioeconomic outcomes of the second generation is central to the study of ethnic stratification. Despite the significance of immigration to Australian society, no similar developed research tradition exists. Theoretically, the thesis dr...
متن کاملSegmented Assimilation Theory: A Reformulation and Empirical Test*
Segmented assimilation theory has been a popular explanation for the diverse experiences of assimilation among new waves of immigrants and their children. In this paper, we review the theory as it is currently articulated in the literature and propose a more restricted reformulation of the theory that yields sharp, empirically falsifiable hypotheses. Our reformulation is based on the idea that ...

Theorizing on segmented assimilation has usefully spurred debate about the experiences and positions of the second generation in the US and, more recently, Europe. This theory has focused primarily on how young people fare in secondary school and the crucial role that families and ethnic social networks can play in supporting second-generation individuals. But what happens when young people lea...

This paper summarises a research program on the new immigrant second generation initiated in the early 1990s and completed in 2006. The four field waves of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS) are described and the main theoretical models emerging from it are presented and graphically summarised. After considering critical views of this theory, we present the most recent results...
متن کاملThe multifaceted American experiences of the children of Asian immigrants: Lessons for segmented assimilation
This article aims to problematize the model minority image of Asian Americans. We argue that America’s racial and class systems of stratification have shaped and, to an important extent, determined second-generation Asian Americans’ multifaceted experiences and life chances. Consistent with the existing research, we find that assimilation outcomes among children of Asian immigrants are diverse ...
